Straits Corners -- 60 milesThe object in this ride is the loop from NY 96 near Candor, down Straits Corners Road, and back north on Halsey Valley Rd. The rest of the ride consists of segments to get to Candor from Ithaca, and back again. The map, "Straits Cor Loop" (PDF) shows the route of the loop. Riding would start from the convenience store at the corner of 96B and Honeypot Rd/Mill St. in Candor. The map, "To Candor" (PDF) shows two ways of going to Candor. Both begin in Ithaca by the HSBC bank on East HIll and head down Pine Tree to Brooktondale Rd. The blue blue route then follows White Church Rd to Coddington Rd to 96B to Candor. The yellow route continues in Brooktondale up the hill to Old 76 Rd and follows the Honeypot route to Candor. The following cue sheet gives yet another path to Candor: out Ellis Hollow to Thomas Rd, and then to White Church Rd. The return on this cue sheet is via Crumtown Rd; no map yet. Take your pick.
If you need food and drink or are meeting other riders in Candor, don't take Gridleyville Crossing. Proceed straight on 96B about 2 mi to the convenience store. Then take 96 west to pick up the route at Straits Corners Rd.
A short option is to start the ride at Straits Corners Rd and NY 96, make the loop and return via Halsey Valley Rd and East Spencer Rd. That comes to about 25 miles. The return from the north end of Crumtown Rd (called Danby Rd on that end) to East Hill has been a subject of dispute. Some favor going to Danby and taking E. Miller up the ridge, as is indicated in this cue sheet. However, those who wish to spend less time on 96B can take 96B north only until Steam Mill Rd, take a right and curve around as the road becomes Durfee Hill, then Nelson Rd. Where Nelson intersects Troy, take a right and follow the cue sheet back.
